Dr Susan Kegley Discusses The Impact Of Sulfoxaflor - May 07,2013

As we continue our special series called “The Neonicotinoid View”, hosts June Stoyer and special guest-host, Tom Theobald will be joined by Dr. Susan E. Kegley, to discuss the impact of sulfoxaflor and discuss the pros and cons of this agro-chemical. Dr. Kegley is Principal and Founder of the Pesticide Research Institute (PRI), an environmental consulting firm providing research, analysis, technical services and expert consulting on the chemistry and toxicology of pesticides. Dr. Kegleys consulting work focuses on pollutant fate and transport; human and ecological exposure assessment and risk assessment; development of tools to assess relative risks for different pesticides; development of integrated pest management (IPM) approaches to minimize pesticide use; environmental monitoring (with a focus on air and water sampling); and analytical chemistry. She also has expertise in pesticide regulation and policy, ecotoxicology, human toxicology, and epidemiology. Dr. Kegley has a BS in Chemistry, Summa cum laude, from the University of Richmond and a PhD in organic/inorganic Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The NLP View: NLP For Dementia Treatment - May 10,2013

Dementia is a term that is used to describe a collection of symptoms including memory loss, problems with reasoning and communication skills, and a reduction in a persons abilities and skills in carrying out activities of daily living. There are a number of different types of dementia the most common being Alzheimers Disease, Vascular Dementia, Frontol Temporal Dementia and Dementia with Lewy bodies. A diagnosis of mixed dementia is when the presentation shows the person to have elements of more than one type of dementia. Dementia is a progressive condition. The symptoms become gradually worse, the rate of which varies from person to person and each person will experience dementia in a different way. The purpose of working with people who have dementia, is to improve the functions that the disability affects to the highest possible level. Once achieved, NLP is used to shift the focus and strengthen every other function and resource that the person is using to compensate for the areas that no longer work to their full capacity. Through using the techniques of NLP, we can improve the persons quality of life and provide them with more independence by removing any possible frustrations she or he is experiencing. Are There Any Neonicotinoid Free Food Sources For Honeybees? - May 13,2013

There is a great deal of concern that our honeybees do not have enough food to eat because of the amount of pesticides being used. However, most homeowners do not realize that their demand for pristine lawns and continuously flowering plants that have low to zero maintenance are a huge part of the problem. The lack of food not only effect honeybees but other pollinators such as butterflies. Are we sacrificing sources of food so that our yards can be free from the site of plants such as clover, and dandelions, etc? Even roadside maintenance poses an issue as wildflowers and other beneficial plants are mowed down for aesthetics. Is there anything we can really do to keep our yards looking nice and not take away food from pollinators? The Neonicotinoid View: Neonicotinoid Impact On Bee Growth - May 15,2013

In the world of beekeeping, neonicotinoids have maintained the spotlight as the scientific evidence continues to grow regarding the decline of the worlds bee population. Neonicotinoids are defined by the EPA as a class of insecticides with a common mode of action that affects the central nervous system of insects, causing paralysis and death. All of the neonicotinoids were registered after 1984 and were not subject to reregistration. Some uncertainties have been identified since their initial registration regarding the potential environmental fate and effects of neonicotinoid pesticides, particularly as they relate to pollinators. Data suggests that neonicotinic residues can accumulate in pollen and nectar of treated plants and may represent a potential exposure to pollinators. Adverse effects data as well as beekill incidents have also been reported, highlighting the potential direct and/or indirect effects of neonicotinic pesticides. Therefore, among other refinements to ecological risk assessment during registration review, the Agency will consider potential effects of the neonicotinoids to honeybees and other pollinating insects. Dr. David Goulson, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Sterling and his team have conducted new research titled “Neonicotinoid pesticide reduces bumble bee colony growth and queen production.” In this special series called “The Neonicotinoid View”, my co- host, Tom Theobald and I will be joined today by Dr. David Goulson, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Sterling to discuss his research. The Coral Reef Crisis - May 16,2013

When the Gulf Oil spill happened, the public was outraged. There was a worldwide outcry of concern for marine life and marine preservation as the Gulf Oil spill contaminated miles of pristine ocean and its surrounding areas. However, there is an even bigger problem affecting marine life. It is being done for the sake of fashion and exotic home décor. An estimated 70-90% of marine aquariums are collected illegally using poisonous cyanide. Other poisons such as bleach, formalin, and gasoline are also used. This not only reduces biodiversity but also removes key components of the reef ecosystem, including algae grazers, which help maintain ecosystem health. Coral reefs contain some of the largest diversity of life in the world. They are home to thousands of different plants and animals. For example, coral reefs in the Florida Keys sustain 500 species of fish, more than 1700 species of mollusks, five species of sea turtles, and hundreds of species of sponges. Did you know that fish feel pain, as do crustaceans and other invertebrates? Coral reefs are typically found at a depth less than 150 feet so that they are reachable by sunlight. Corals contain microscopic algae, called zooxanthellae, that provide the coral with food and give them their vibrant colors. On average, they grow about 1 mm to 4cm per year. Clean Energy View: Fukushima’s History, Recovery & Future - May 23,2013

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster consisted of a series of equipment failures, nuclear meltdowns, and releases of radioactive materials at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, following the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011. It is the largest nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. Energy expert, Thomas S. Drolet, President of Drolet and Associates Energy Services, Inc. recently visited Fukushima and was also at the site shortly after the disaster occurred to assist with the recovery process. Mr. Drolet has also been to Chernobyl and is a highly sought after speaker on the subject of nuclear energy. There is a lot to be learned from this event, especially as it pertains to Japans history, culture and ability to create its own source of stable energy. Percy Schmeiser: The Farmer Who Sued Monsanto - May 28,2013

Who is Percy Schmeiser? He is a canola farmer from Saskatchewan, Canada and was the first farmer to win a law suit against Monsanto. This landmark case, which went before the Federal Court of Canada, has attracted international attention because it could help determine how much control a handful of powerful biotech companies can exert over farmers. Schmeiser believes this precedent setting agreement ensures that farmers will be entitled to reimbursement when their fields become contaminated with unwanted Roundup Ready canola or any other unwanted GMO plants. A Look Back At Why Terry Ingram’s Hives Were Confiscated - May 30,2013

On today's show, I decided to air this encore segment of The Organic View because of the great interest on in my interview without attribution. I hope this will give those of you who are sincerely interested in this situation, the opportunity to hear the original interview with Terry Ingram. Terrence Ingram is a well-educated farmer who holds degrees in physics and math, with minors in history, biology and education. He has been farming for over 50 years, has been a beekeeper, apiary instructor and bee researcher for over 56 years. He was also a columnist with the prestigious American Bee Journal. Terry has been working to raise awareness about the devastating impact of agro-chemicals on bees as well as other beings such as the Bald Eagle. He has been monitoring the impact and decline for many years. Terry Ingram believes his bees were recently confiscated by the Illinois Department of Agriculture because he was developing a glyphosate resistant bee. This confiscation destroys years of his research. Mr. Ingram will have an opportunity in greater detail to explain what he believes has occurred here.
