The Organic View: How To Legalize Backyard Beekeeping - Jun 04,2013

Regardless of the fact that there is a tremendous decline in the bee population due to Colony Collapse Disorder, amongst other diseases, there are still many areas where backyard beekeeping has been banned. The reason for the ban in many cases is mostly due to lack of knowledge about bees as well as fear of lawsuits. The plight to legalize beekeeping in a community is not something many beekeepers want to undertake. The consequences beekeepers that challenge these laws face range from risk of being fined to confiscation of their bees, which can also be a big financial loss. There are some areas that may even impose incarceration. Every area is different. Marygael Meister is a beekeeper that sought to do this for the city of Denver. It was a very trying process but one she was determined to see changed. Her efforts led her to establish and organize DenverBee.org. Ms. Meister successfully changed the citys ordinance but also found that there is a great deal of responsibility that comes with such a privilege.

Clean Energy View: Invasive Species For Renewable Energy? - Jun 05,2013

As we shift from petroleum-based energy to renewable energy, the production of biofuel, created from invasive species appears to be a viable option. However, certain plant species which have been proposed for biofuel production include invasive species and/or other plants which have the potential to escape cultivation. Is this a good solution for eliminating an environmental issue while satisfying an energy need or is this type of biofuel merely creating a disaster in the making? In this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, hosts, June Stoyer and special guest host, Luis Mejia talk to Dr. Lewis Ziska about the pros and cons of using invasive species as biofuel. Dr. Ziska is a Plant Physiologist with the USDAs Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland. After graduating from the University of California, Davis, he began his career as a Smithsonian fellow, and then took up residence as the Project Leader for global climate change at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines before joining USDA. Dr. Ziska has published numerous papers on carbon dioxide and climate change impacts on agriculture, weed biology and public health. At present he is investigating the role of rising carbon dioxide and changing climate on food security, invasive species and aerobiology. Dr. Ziskas research has appeared in: The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report and CNN Headline News. What Are We Eating? Joel Salatin: Folks, This Ain't Normal! - Jun 06,2013

Thanks to decades of clever mass marketing campaigns, the average person has become completely disconnected with how our food is grown and also what real food should look like. With the agro-chemical companies chiming away that “there is going to be a food shortage if we dont produce more food and decrease the world population in order for everyone to survive,” the reality is most people do not have a clue as to how their food is produced, where it is grown or how it is grown. Processed foods, initially created with the intention to save time, are simply not a healthy choice. Some of these processed, ready to “heat and serve” products made with “real chicken” are breaded, seasoned and disguised in all sorts of geometrical shapes so that children will be encouraged to eat them. Meanwhile, the average child who primarily consumes this type of food has no idea what a chicken looks like, sounds like or the fact that chickens are smart, loving beings. It takes a true organic farmer to really get the point across about the benefits of growing organics and eating organics. Joel Salatin is an organic farmer from Virginia who talks about the problems he sees not only as an organic farmer but as a consumer of organic foods. In his best-selling book, Folks, This Ain't Normal: A Farmers Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better World he takes us into his world as he talks about how our food is produced and why we ought to take a closer look at where and how our food is produced. There is a great deal of concern that our honeybees do not have enough food to eat because of the amount of pesticides being used. However, most homeowners do not realize that their demand for pristine lawns and continuously flowering plants that have low to zero maintenance are a huge part of the problem. The lack of food not only effect honeybees but other pollinators such as butterflies. Are we sacrificing sources of food so that our yards can be free from the site of plants such as clover, and dandelions, etc? Even roadside maintenance poses an issue as wildflowers and other beneficial plants are mowed down for aesthetics. Is there anything we can really do to keep our yards looking nice and not take away food from pollinators? In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Dr. Vera Krischik about how we can help pollinators by practicing IPM (Integrated Pest Management) and take an active role in replenishing available food sources. How NLP Can Resolve Conflicts With Your Father - Jun 11,2013

This weekend we celebrate Fathers Day which is not always easy for many people. If you are looking at ways to improve your relationship with your father and communicate more effectively or perhaps understand the reasons behind events that have happened in the past, there is a technique called NLP that can be of great value. Neuro-linguistic programming (or NLP) is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created in the 1970s. The title refers to a stated connection between the neurological processes ("neuro"), language ("linguistic"), and behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience ("programming") and can be organized to achieve specific goals in life. Relationships are complex. The emotions that surround them often cloud the reality of the actual event that happened. By comprehending different perspectives, especially your Fathers, you will be able to see things differently. This will enable you to review the impact that your behavior has made upon the event/s and allow you to start healing the wounds that were created. NLP enables you to look at the relationship with your father, whether he is alive or has passed. Donna Blinston is a Registered Nurse, with a specialty in gastroenterology, the Liver and in blood bourne viruses. As a Certified Trainer of NLP she uses the tools and techniques of NLP to build a professional relationship with and enhance the lives of her patients to promote good health and wellbeing. Steve Ellis owns the Old Mill Honey Company which operates roughly 2,300 hives of bees in Minnesota for honey production and pollination for crops in California. The Neonicotinoid View: Casualties of the Neonicotinoid War - Jun 13,2013

There has been a huge debate over the impact of Neonicotinoids, which are a class of systemic pesticides with a common mode of action that affects the central nervous system of insects, causing paralysis and death. Neonicotinoids are often applied as seed treatments which means coating the seeds before planting. They also generate billions of dollars for the agro-chemical companies that manufacture these chemicals and are available not only for agricultural applications but also can be found in a myriad of garden products available all over the world.As the peer-reviewed, independent scientific evidence mounts from reputable scientists around the world that these chemicals are the cause of global honey bee decline, the industry still claims that they are not to blame. In fact, industry is now shifting the blame on the beekeepers insinuating that beekeepers who have been managing hives for generations are at fault.The industry argues that without these systemic pesticides, agriculture will suffer, resulting in crop failure. Perhaps what should be considered is the number of commercial beekeeping operations that have been operating for generations which will be forced to close due to exposure from Neonicotinoid pesticides.In this special series called "The Neonicotinoid View", host, June Stoyer and special guest co-host, Tom Theobald will be joined by New York State commercial beekeeper, Jim Doan to discuss his recent decision to sell his farm after losing his bees to Neonicotinoid exposure. At one point during his tenure, Jim grew his business to manage up to 5300 hives and just a few short years later was reduced to nothing due to a never-ending war against Neonicotinoid exposure. The Percy Schmeiser Story: How A Farmer Beat Monsanto - Jun 18,2013

Who is Percy Schmeiser? He is a canola farmer from Saskatchewan, Canada and was the first farmer to win a law suit against Monsanto. This landmark case, which went before the Federal Court of Canada, has attracted international attention because it could help determine how much control a handful of powerful biotech companies can exert over farmers. Schmeiser believes this precedent setting agreement ensures that farmers will be entitled to reimbursement when their fields become contaminated with unwanted Roundup Ready canola or any other unwanted GMO plants. Why Were Terry Ingram’s Bees Confiscated? - Jun 25,2013

On todays show, I decided to air this encore segment of The Organic View because of the great interest on in my interview without attribution. I hope this will give those of you who are sincerely interested in this situation, the opportunity to hear the original interview with Terry Ingram. Terrence Ingram is a well-educated farmer who holds degrees in physics and math, with minors in history, biology and education. He has been farming for over 50 years, has been a beekeeper, apiary instructor and bee researcher for over 56 years. He was also a columnist with the prestigious American Bee Journal. Terry has been working to raise awareness about the devastating impact of agro-chemicals on bees as well as other beings such as the Bald Eagle. He has been monitoring the impact and decline for many years. Terry Ingram believes his bees were recently confiscated by the Illinois Department of Agriculture because he was developing a glyphosate resistant bee. This confiscation destroys years of his research. Mr. Ingram will have an opportunity in greater detail to explain what he believes has occurred here. Author, Thomas Fleming: A Disease in the Public Mind - Jun 25,2013

It has been one hundred and fifty-two years since the United States fought the War between the States otherwise known as The American Civil War. In this segment of The Organic View, host, June Stoyer talks to author, Thomas Fleming, who recently published, A Disease in the Public Mind: A New Understanding of Why We Fought the Civil War. By the time John Brown hung from the gallows for his crimes at Harper's Ferry, Northern abolitionists had made him a “holy martyr” in their campaign against Southern slave owners. This Northern hatred for Southerners long predated their objections to slavery. They were convinced that New England, whose spokesmen had begun the American Revolution, should have been the leader of the new nation. Instead, they had been displaced by Southern “slavocrats” like Thomas Jefferson. This malevolent envy exacerbated the South's greatest fear: a race war. Jefferson's cry, “We are truly to be pitied,” summed up their dread. For decades, extremists in both regions flung insults and threats, creating intractable enmities. By 1861, only a civil war that would kill a million men could save the Union. Thomas Fleming is a distinguished historian and the author of more than fifty books. A frequent guest on PBS, A&E, and the History Channel, Fleming has contributed articles to American Heritage, MHQ, and other magazines. He lives in New York.

Darren Cox Discusses New EPA Guidelines - Jun 26,2013

To discuss the EPA's reformed Guidelines for Investigators of Pesticide Incidents Involving Bees which was recently released. About Darren: Darren Cox is President of Cox Honey of Utah, LLC. A fourth generation beekeeper, Cox's family started keeping bees in St. George, Utah in the late 1800's. In 1929 Cox Honey was incorporated as a family business. Darren bought and took over operation of Cox Honey from his father, Duane Cox, in 2002. He manages between 4,000 and 5,000 hives of honeybees. Darren was appointed as chairman for the American Honey Producers Association Ag Advisory Board in 2008; appointed as Chairman for the National Honey Bee Advisory Board in 2009-2010; board member of National Pollinator Defense Fund; elected delegate for the American Honey Producers Association for the state of Utah since 2008, and currently serves as Vice President of the American Honey Producers Association.
