October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is celebrating its 25 year anniversary! According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year. An estimated 40,170 women are expected to die from the disease in 2009 alone. Today, there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, New York's very own Irene Virag (www.irenevirag.com) will discuss her own journey through cancer, how it changed her as a gardener and as a writer. Irene is a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper reporter. In the Northeast, there is an area that extends throughout much of the Appalachian Basin called The Marcellus Shale. This area, located in the Northeast seems to offer the perfect resource to produce more gas and according to the gas companies, create new jobs. The shale contains largely untapped natural gas reserves and has now become the prime focus for energy development. The natural gas industry is spending millions of dollars to sell the merits of drilling for gas in the Marcellus Shale. The process of extracting the gas is called hydro-fracking or more commonly referred to as fracking. When it comes to natural gas development, there are many concerns not only about the environment but about health and land value as well. What are the financial risks involved with leasing your land? In 1956, Geoscientist, Marion King Hubbert predicted that, for any given geographical area, from an individual oil field to the planet as a whole, the rate of petroleum production of the reserve over time would resemble a bell curve. Based on his theory, he presented a paper to the 1956 meeting of the American Petroleum Institute in San Antonio, Texas, which predicted that overall petroleum production would peak in the United States between the late 1960s and the early 1970s. While Dr. Hubbert's analysis may have missed the mark in terms of date, one only has to look at the price at the gas pump to see that the days of cheap petroleum are gone. In the past, one gallon of oil produced 100 gallons. Now production efficiencies cost 1 gallon per 3 gallons in new sources like tar sands. These costs do not include the public health impacts or environmental degradation further inflating fossil fuels actual costs to society. With American fossil fuel companies spending only 0.42% of sales in research and development (the pharmaceutical industry spends 20.5%), the time has now come to push forward and invest in a clean energy future. Percy Schmeiser is well known activist that has been fighting hard to educate the public about GMO's and the issues that arise for farmers. He was the first farmer to win a law suit against Monsanto. The landmark case, which went before the Federal Court of Canada, attracted international attention because it demonstrated the power of the farmer. When it comes to our food in American, there are no laws that mandate labeling for GMO's. Consumers assume that the manufacturers are using ingredients that are safe and will not affect their health. Unfortunately, 80% of the packaged foods in America contain Genetically Engineered ingredients that have not been proven safe and are not labeled! The Right2KnowMarch.org which was organized to raise awareness for GMO-Labeling is a historic event that kicked off on October 1st and will continue to October 16th. Marchers from across the country will be walking from New York City to the White House, demanding labeling of all Genetically Engineered Foods. This event seeks to raise national awareness and create pressure in the 2012 election cycle for politicians to take positions and enact legislation requiring Genetically Engineered foods to be labeled. In many ways this march is the beginning of a new broad-based movement for GMO labeling.
