Joel Salatin "Folks, This Ain’t Normal!" - Feb 03,2012

Thanks to decades of clever mass marketing campaigns, the average person has become completely disconnected with how our food is grown and also what real food should look like. With the agro-chemical companies chiming away that “there is going to be a food shortage if we don’t produce more food and decrease the world population in order for everyone to survive,” the reality is most people do not have a clue as to how their food is produced, where it is grown or how it is grown. Processed foods, initially created with the intention to save time, are simply not a healthy choice. Some of these processed, ready to “heat and serve” products made with “real chicken” are breaded, seasoned and disguised in all sorts of geometrical shapes so that children will be encouraged to eat them. Meanwhile, the average child who primarily consumes this type of food has no idea what a chicken looks like, sounds like or the fact that chickens are smart, loving beings. It takes a true organic farmer to really get the point across about the benefits of growing organics and eating organics. Joel Salatin is an organic farmer from Virginia who talks about the problems he sees not only as an organic farmer but as a consumer of organic foods. In hisbest-selling book, Folks, This Aint Normal: A Farmers Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better World he takes us into his world as he talks about how our food is produced and why we ought to take a closer look at where and how our food is produced. Michael Potter: GMO’s and Organic Sustainability - Feb 13,2012

According to the EPA, sustainability is defined as being based on a simple principle: everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations. Sustainability is important to making sure that we have and will continue to have, the water, materials, and resources to protect human health and our environment. Sustainability is a word often used by clever marketers to promote an agenda to address the propaganda that the overpopulated world is running out of food due. With conventional crops devastating the environment, it appears that all we are doing is mining the land instead of farming it sustainably. In essence, in order to be truly sustainable, agriculture must be perpetuated so it can be productive year after year and generation after generation. The privately stated policy from the agro-chemical companies is market domination through contamination, meanwhile it is translated for the public as peaceful co-existence, when in fact there is no peaceful co-existence. Is it possible for the organic producers to survive? Eden Foods, Inc., (also known as Eden Organic), is the oldest family owned organic food producer in the USA and the largest supplier of organic dry grocery items. Michael Potter, President of Eden Foods has been a strong advocate of organics and has also been a big supporter of the Non-GMO Project which is pushing for GMO Labeling. Conventional food producers currently do not have to label whether or not GMO ingredients are used in foods sold in the USA. Tune in as host, June Stoyer talks to Michael Potter, to discuss the true meaning of organic sustainability and impact of GMO’s on our food and environment.

Julia Lindsey: The Simple Choice of Joy & Abundance - Feb 14,2012

You have a choice in life to be either happy or miserable. It is up to you. Especially during tough times, sometimes, we all need a little inspiration and motivation. While there are many things people can use for inspiration, nothing more powerful than the written word. Books have the power to take your mind off your problems, heartache and fears, even if for a few brief moments. Books have been successfully utilized in co-dependency programs and other kinds of therapy. Julia Lindsey is the co-founder of Our Little Books which publishes an eclectic set of little books dedicated towards education and inspiration. For the past thirty years, Julia has been an Occupational Therapist, specializing in pediatrics and committed to developing the potential of individual students in the school system so each child can be successful. She touches many lives by using her personal experiences and expertise to help others grow. After four years of marriage and two babies, her commitment to personal development and faith in her own ability to achieve her dreams was certainly put to the test. Her husband was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and heart disease; he eventually had to give up a successful law practice and stay at home. As the couple struggled to juggle their finances, health issues, and growing children, they were living by default instead of deliberately. Even though Julia knew intellectually what she should do, she did not have role models to help her clarify her thoughts and apply those skills in a practical way to her own life. She managed to keep a positive attitude, but it took nearly fifteen years for her to find life balance and a sense of control in her life. From her own personal experience, she knows that there are many individuals who could learn to live a more fulfilling life if they knew that they could simply make a choice to do that. Her books, Joy is Simply a Choice and Abundance is Simply a Choice reflect that hard-earned wisdom.

LionAid.org Hosts Conference On Conservation Of African Lion - Feb 15,2012

In the 1960’s, there were over 200,000 lions in Africa. Now the population is down to less than 25,000; a decline close to 90% in just 50 years. LionAid.org dedicated to the conservation of lions, has been successfully working with members of the UK and EU Parliaments to address major issues contributing to the catastrophic lion population decline. While LionAid accepts that loss of habitat and co-existence issues with humans and livestock have been a major factor, they now consider that lion trophy hunting as a significant source of mortality that needs more stringent regulation. LionAid also recognizes that disease issues emanate from domestic animals continues to affect lions. As a component of their overall lion conservation plans, a conference will be held in Nairobi on March 29 and 30, 2012. Jim Gerritsen -The Significance of OSGATA v. Monsanto - Feb 16,2012

To what extent must organic farmers and growers go to in order to protect their businesses? If a farmer chooses to grow organically and is contaminated by the GMO technology, they may be sued for the contamination as a patent infringement. Is there anything they can do? The large group of 83 Plaintiffs in OSGATA v. Monsanto is comprised of individual family farmers, independent seed companies and agricultural organizations. The total number of members within the plaintiff group exceeds 300,000 and includes many thousands of certified organic farmers. The Plaintiffs are not seeking any monetary compensation. Instead, the farmers are pre-emptively suing Monsanto and seeking court protection under the Declaratory Judgment Act, from Monsanto-initiated patent infringement lawsuits Jim Gerritsen, Maine organic seed farmer and President of lead Plaintiff, Organic Seed Growers And Trade Association said, "our lawyer did a good job explaining the current injustice farmers face. We have a right to be secure on our farms and to be free from Monsantos GMO trespass. If we become contaminated by Monsanto, not only is the value of our organic seed crop extinguished but we could also be sued by Monsanto for patent infringement because their contamination results in our possession of their GMO technology. We have farmers who have stopped growing organic corn, organic canola and organic soybeans because they cant risk being sued by Monsanto. Its not fair and its not right. Family farmers need justice and we deserve the protection of the court." Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by special guest, Jim Gerritsen, to discuss this very important case.

Jonathan Deal- The Battle To Protect The Karoo From Fracking - Feb 17,2012

The Karoo is the largest ecosystem in South Africa and is home to a fascinating diversity of life, all having adapted to survive an unforgiving landscape. Natural gas exploration has now come to invade this magnificent land in order to exploit its natural resources. A moratorium has been placed on granting exploration licenses to major fuel companies, which allows them to use hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, as a means to extract gas from the earth. Hydraulic fracturing is a drilling technique used to extract shale gas from deep underground. It involves pumping enormous volumes of water, sand and chemicals into horizontally drilled wells under great pressure to shatter the rock layer and release trapped gas. Jonathan Deal is the Chairman of the Treasure the Karoo Action Group (TKAG). He has led the campaign against hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo and recently won a court action requiring the Mineral Resources Minister to release the names of the task team assessing the pros and cons of fracking. Mr. Deal is also contesting claims that the Karoo would benefit from this development. Will the Karoo sustain environmental devastation from natural gas development? What are the risks to the water supply? Will the benefits that the industry claims be forthcoming? Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by special guest, Jonathan Deal, Chairman of Treasure The Karoo, to discuss this battle to protect the Karoo.

The Case Against Fluoride by Dr. Paul Connett - Feb 28,2012

Most people take for granted that the water in from their faucet is safe to drink or is it? There is a lot of controversy over just how safe our tap water is and also if our government agencies have the right to treat drinking water that is consumed by the masses. The agencies that are charged with protecting our water claim that everything is safe. However, there are many scientists who disagree. The Case Against Fluoride by Dr. Paul Connett, Dr. James Beck, and Dr. H. Spedding Micklem, DPhil, takes a new look at the science behind water fluoridation and argues that just because the medical establishment endorses a public health measure, that doesnt mean its safe. In the case of water fluoridation, the chemicals used to fluoridate the water that more than 180 million people drink each day are not pharmaceutical grade, but rather hazardous waste products of the phosphate fertilizer industry; it is illegal to dump them into rivers and lakes or release them into the atmosphere. And water fluoridation is a prime example of one of the worst medical practices possible-forced medication with no control over the dose or who gets it. Perhaps most shocking of all, it is not subject to any federal regulation. Dr. Paul Connett is the Director of the Flouride Action Network (FAN), and the Executive Director of its parent body, the American Environmental Health Studies Project (AEHSP). He has spoken and given more than 2,000 presentations in 49 states and 52 countries on the issue of waste management. He holds a bachelors degree from the University of Cambridge, a Ph.D. in chemistry from Dartmouth College and is a retired professor of environmental chemistry and toxicology at St. Lawrence University. American Organic Citrus Is #1! Why Are We Importing Citrus? - Feb 29,2012

American organic citrus farmers produce the best quality organic oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes in the world, but oddly enough we still continue to import citrus. Thanks to the off peak as well as peak season imports, American citrus farmers are now facing a problem with the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri Kuwayama). It has become the most important insect pest of Florida citrus due to the presence of citrus greening disease spread by the psyllid. In other regions of the world where citrus is grown and greening disease is present, use of insecticides to control the psyllid vector has been a major component of greening management strategies. Who exactly is monitoring these chemicals? How can we trust the producers that are in far-away lands where there is no regulation? Why do we continue to import citrus when we have the best in the world right at our fingertips? Perhaps it is because most people have not taken the time to connect directly with the farmers who grow our food and understand what great lengths they go to in order to produce fine quality organic foods. In America, organic citrus farmers have opted to go back to basics in order to save their trees as they continue to produce the best tasting citrus. In 1999, Matt McLean ventured into the organic juice business with a passion for healthy living as well as a long family history of growing citrus in Florida. Matt’s goal was, and still is, to produce the highest quality juice, using only premium 100% organically-grown fruit that is free from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. His company, Uncle Matt’s Organics is the leading producer of premium certified organic citrus from Florida. Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by special guest, Matt McLean to talk about what organic citrus farmers are doing to protect their farms.
