The Execution Of Marius: What Are Zoos Really Teaching Children? - Feb 14,2014
Recently, a two-year-old giraffe named Marius was publicly executed in front of children at the Copenhagen Zoo. He was then butchered and fed to the lions. The world reaction was one of horror and disgust. People cried out for justice. How do we justify raising an animal that is our responsibility and then killing it for reasons that are no longer acceptable? Where is the zoo's responsibility to demonstrate compassion and respect in the way they treated Marius in his final moments? Why would the Copenhagen Zoo refuse to rehouse Marius when they had valid, legitimate offers? Do we need to rethink about the useful purpose zoos have now in the world? What could the Copenhagen Zoo find "educational" in the macabre spectacle they provided to the public? Where does the money game fit into the big picture of zoos? In this special evening edition of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer will talk to world renowned animal communicator, Laura Lassiter? about the recent public execution of Marius the giraffe and what people can do to bring about change. How To Legalize Backyard Beekeeping - Feb 19,2014
Regardless of the fact that there is a tremendous decline in the honeybee population, there are still many areas where backyard beekeeping has been banned. The reason for the ban in many cases is mostly due to lack of knowledge about bees as well as fear of lawsuits. The plight to legalize beekeeping in a community is not something many beekeepers want to undertake. The consequences beekeepers that challenge these laws face range from risk of being fined to confiscation of their bees, which can also be a big financial loss. There are some areas that may even impose incarceration. Every area is different. Marygael Meister is a beekeeper that sought to do this for the city of Denver. It was a very trying process but one she was determined to see changed. Her efforts led her to establish and organize DenverBee.org. Ms. Meister successfully changed the citys ordinance but also found that there is a great deal of responsibility that comes with such a privilege. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer will speak to Marygael Meister, founder and President of DenverBee.org to learn about her relentless efforts to get the laws changed, stay tuned! It is always interesting to see the difference in plant growth, production and finally the taste of the fruit in your cherished recipe. Especially for culinary enthusiasts, the more varieties you have the more amazing your dish is, complete with a horticultural biography to entertain your guests leaving them in awe. What if you found that through the years you had quite the assortment of organic tomato seeds in your collection? Their hands-on tomato production and seed harvest techniques ensure the highest quality product and help ensure that these precious heirloom tomato varieties will be sustained for years to come. In 2008 Ibsen retired from 18 years of producing the nationally celebrated Carmel TomatoFest event in Carmel CA. DIY Renovation & Energy Conservation For Your Home - Feb 25,2014
The DIY home renovation concept is a very popular trend, especially with the high cost of home renovation and the need to live more sustainably. Home owners are looking at the comfort and personalization of the home as opposed to buying something that is simply “bigger and better”. Instead of spending a fortune on brand new materials, people are opting to use materials from old buildings or “deconstruction” as well as other materials often headed for landfills. By embracing building concepts such as straw bale building on a community level, people can learn to work together within their own communities to create more affordable housing as they develop a more tight-knit community. In this special series called The Clean Energy View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to author, Jessica Kellner about her book, Housing Reclaimed: Sustainable Homes For Next To Nothing. Jessica will share tips and answer many of the questions home owners have about DIY renovation. Today's show is brought to you by Eden Foods the most trusted name in certified organic clean food! Can We Create Neonicotinoid Free Food Sources For Honeybees? - Feb 26,2014
There is a great deal of concern that our honeybees do not have enough food to eat because of the amount of pesticides being used. However, most homeowners do not realize that their demand for pristine lawns and continuously flowering plants that have low to zero maintenance are a huge part of the problem. The lack of food not only effect honeybees but other pollinators such as butterflies. Are we sacrificing sources of food so that our yards can be free from the site of plants such as clover, and dandelions, etc? Even roadside maintenance poses an issue as wildflowers and other beneficial plants are mowed down for aesthetics. Is there anything we can really do to keep our yards looking nice and not take away food from pollinators? In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Dr. Vera Krischik about how we can help pollinators by practicing IPM (Integrated Pest Management) and take an active role in replenishing available food sources. Dr. Krischik is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Entomology at the U of Minnesota and an Extension Specialist in Landscape Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
